    Birders:

Re Phila's and Steve's questions and comments (pasted in below) . . .

The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology used to maintain a checklist of the
birds of the Berkeley Hills (I think it was titled). The latest
edition was, I believe, 1988, and I was surprised to see Canyon Wren
among the birds mentioned, albeit "rare" or some such designation. I
have several copies of the latest checklist, and one of an earlier
edition, but of course right now have not the slightest idea where I
carefully stored them, so can't be more specific.

Which means there was probably little reason for me to write, except
that I have recorded the bird in my yard, which sits on the edge of
Tilden Park, just uphill from Lake Anza, in Alameda County but within
100 yards of the county line. At 7:05 pm on September 8, 1997 I was
stunned to look outside a ground-level window on the east side of our
house and see a Canyon Wren, working the base of our wall. As I
watched it from other windows, it worked its way counterclockwise
around two sides of our house before I lost track of the bird. It was
feeding actively, bobbed several times at one point, and uttered its
"jeeeeer" note about four times that I heard.

My best yard bird by far . . .

    Phila and all,
Surprisingly enough, there is a previous report from
Tilden Park: One was reported on 12/30/1962 by Rich
Stallcup and Jan Kroesen. The citation says Alameda
County but very little of Tilden Park is in Alameda
County and many older records have erroneously
reported as Alameda when they were actually in CCC.
